New Thing #24 – Charleston, SC

My girlfriend and I started a tradition last year of a girls weekend away. We were in sunny Orlando last March and had a wonderful time. This year we choose Charleston, South Carolina, a favorite for my friend but a “new thing” to me. I flew to Atlanta where my friend lives, stayed with her Wednesday night and she drove us to Charleston Thursday morning.

Thursday is raining hard so we take our time leaving Atlanta and driving to Charleston. We arrive late afternoon and check into the Francis Marion Hotel, a lovely historic hotel located downtown.

Friday, we visit the Charleston Tea Plantation and Magnolia Gardens.  In Indiana, the trees are not even thinking about budding  so I love seeing the flowering trees.  The gardens at Magnolia Plantation are beautiful, especially on such a gorgeous spring day.

Saturday, we shop in the Market and explore the downtown district, snapping lots of photos of architectural interest – lovely homes, gardens, iron work, churches, and doors. We see Rainbow Row and the Battery. This is such a charming city!

The food is absolutely amazing! I recommend Poogan’s Porch, 82 Queen Street, and Amen Street. We enjoy wonderful seafood and low country cooking.  Of course, the best part of dinner is sharing it with a dear friend!  Where will we go next year…
