New Thing #34 – City Market Catacombs

Through an email message from Indiana Landmarks, I learn about the City Market Catacombs Tours and make that another “new thing”. I didn’t know that the catacombs existed or that there used to be a Tomlinson Building in Indianapolis adjacent to and larger than the City Market.  The Tomlinson Building was built in 1886 but burned down in 1958.  The building hosted concerts, meetings and sporting events.  A vast basement of brick arches remains and public tours are available. image image image image image image   The basement was historically used for storage and is not used for events today since the space does not meet building codes.  But today a fairly large group of people spend 30 minutes learning about history hidden below the Plaza of the City Market.  Who knew?
