Yeah!! It is the weekend before my 51st birthday and I only have one more “New Thing” to bring the total to 50!
I’m visiting my college son in Louisville for the weekend to make sure he is settled in his apartment before classes start so I tell him that we need to do something new. We decide on the Kentucky Derby Museum.
We only have about an hour and a half until the museum closes so luckily Churchill Downs is close to my B&B in Old Lousiville and my son’s apartment. Ninety minutes is actually sufficient to see the museum and take the walking tour. We browse the exhibit area in the museum before watching a video about the race track. It is exciting this year since American Pharoah won the Triple Crown.
The walking tour is fun and informative as our tour guide explains the history and tradition of Churchill Downs. We see the paddock where horses are taken before the race.
Then we enter the seating area and see the dirt track, the finish line and the winner’s circle. We hear about where the rich and famous get to sit when they watch the Derby. Very cool!
I definitely recommend this stop as a fun, interesting and affordable view of history and current culture.
